Moving the family to Singapore in 2026: schools, Dependant's Pass, and the cost picture

Singapore family relocation rewards order. Here's the 2026 practical picture for schools, family permits, and the cost realities.

Family relocation to Singapore is one of the more procedural cross-border moves - efficient when planned in the right order, frustrating when steps are skipped. The realities below come up in nearly every family case.

The Dependant's Pass

Spouse and qualifying children can be included on the EP / ONE Pass holder's status through the Dependant's Pass, subject to the principal's salary meeting the relevant threshold. The threshold has been adjusted upward over time; verify current rules.

For principals below the Dependant's Pass threshold, the Long-Term Visit Pass is an alternative for the spouse, though it has different rights and limitations.

Schools

Singapore has a developed market of international schools (American, British, French, German, Australian, Japanese, Korean, and many others) alongside the local school system.

Key realities:

  • Demand exceeds supply at the best-known schools
  • Waiting lists at top schools can be 12-18 months
  • Some schools have priority categories for certain nationalities or for siblings of existing students
  • Costs at international schools are at the upper international end
  • Local school admission for non-citizens is possible but with priorities favoring citizens and PRs

Plan school placement before the move. This is the binding constraint for most family cases.

Housing

Singapore housing is expensive by international standards. Family-sized housing in expat-popular zones (within reasonable commute to schools and workplaces) carries premium pricing.

Mature rental market; landlords expect standard documentation including the EP / ONE Pass / Dependant's Pass status.

Healthcare

World-class healthcare system - public, private, and international. Private health insurance covers expat employees and families to international standards. The medical infrastructure is one of the things Singapore does best.

Cost of living

Singapore is among the most expensive cities in the world. For families:

  • Housing is the largest line item
  • International schools are the second
  • Help and childcare options are available with their own costs
  • Day-to-day costs are at international city levels

Budget honestly. Singapore rewards employers who pay for the package; it punishes cases that move in underfinanced.

What we tell families

  • Plan schools first; everything else flows from school placement.
  • Verify Dependant's Pass eligibility before assuming family inclusion.
  • Budget realistically - Singapore is not a cheap move.
  • Build the move around the principal's employment package.
  • Plan year-one tax filings for the whole family with consistent advice.
  • Build expat connections through schools, sports, and professional networks.

Singapore family moves work for families that planned them.
