Living in Antigua in 2026: lifestyle realities and the practical considerations

For cases that actually spend time in Antigua post-CBI, the lifestyle is the point. Here's the practical picture of life on the ground.

For CBI cases that actually plan to spend time in Antigua and Barbuda - whether to satisfy the presence requirement or because the lifestyle is the goal - the practical realities below come up.

Geography and lifestyle

Antigua is small (about 280 km²) and Barbuda is smaller. The expat infrastructure is concentrated along the coastlines, with St John's as the capital and Jolly Harbour, English Harbour, and Falmouth Harbour as the main yachting and lifestyle nodes.

For short visits to satisfy the presence requirement, the coastal resort and rental market is mature. For longer stays, the housing and services market is shallower than larger Caribbean neighbours.

Connectivity

V. C. Bird International Airport has direct flights to North America (US east coast, Canada) and to the UK / continental Europe seasonally. Caribbean regional connectivity is good.

Healthcare

Routine care available locally; specialist and complex care typically involves either travel to other Caribbean nodes, North America, or the UK. International private cover with cross-border coverage is sensible.

Schools

A limited international school market. For families with school-age children planning extended time, this is the binding constraint.

Banking and admin

Local banking is workable for residents; CBI holders without genuine residence face the standard limitations. The administrative system is functional.

Cost

Not a low-cost destination. Imported goods carry the standard Caribbean premium. The quality coastal market is at international standards with prices to match.

What we tell movers

  • Plan the presence requirement deliberately - the minimum days matter.
  • For longer-term lifestyle moves, treat schools and healthcare as binding.
  • For shorter visits, the resort and rental market is well-developed.
  • Build cross-border healthcare arrangements.
  • Use Caribbean and North American connectivity strategically.

Antigua works for the cases that fit it as a lifestyle choice.
